Missed Pill

Combined Oral Contraception

  • If you miss a Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC) pill, it’s important to take action quickly to maintain contraceptive protection.
  • If you miss 1 pill, take it as soon as you remember, even if it means taking two pills in one day.
  • Continue taking the rest of your pills at the usual time.
  • If you miss 2 or more pills, take the most recent missed pill as soon as possible and discard the earlier missed pill(s).
  • You should then continue taking the remaining pills as normal.
  • However, if you miss more than 1 pill in the last week of your pill pack, you may need to use additional contraception, such as condoms, for the next 7 days.
  • If you miss pills in the first week and had unprotected sex, there may be a risk of pregnancy, and you should consider emergency contraception.
  • Always check the instructions provided with your specific brand of COC and, if unsure, consult your healthcare provider for guidance.

Progesterone Only Pill

If you miss a Progestogen-Only Pill (POP), it’s important to act quickly to ensure continued contraceptive protection. However, the instructions can vary depending on the type of POP. For Desogestrel (a specific type of POP), here's what you should do:

  • If you miss 1 pill, take it as soon as you remember, even if this means taking two pills in one day. You should then continue taking your pills at the usual time.
  • If you miss more than 1 pill, take the most recent missed pill as soon as possible and discard the earlier missed pill(s). You will need to use additional contraception, such as condoms, for the next 48 hours.
  • If you miss a pill by more than 12 hours, the effectiveness of Desogestrel may be reduced. Take the missed pill as soon as possible, and continue your pack as normal. You must also use additional contraception for the next 48 hours.

Risk of Pregnancy and Emergency Contraception

If you miss a pill during the last 7 days of your pack and have had unprotected sex, there is a risk of pregnancy, and you may need to consider emergency contraception.

Always refer to the specific instructions that come with your Desogestrel brand of POP, and if you’re uncertain or have had unprotected sex, contact your healthcare provider for further advice.
