Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill

The combined pill, often referred to simply as "the pill," contains synthetic versions of the hormone’s oestrogen and progestogen. It prevents pregnancy in three ways:

  • Stops ovulation – it prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg each month.
  • Thickens cervical mucus – making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg.
  • Thins the womb lining – reducing the chance of a fertilised egg implanting.

Typically, you take one pill at the same time every day for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break before starting the next pack. However, some types of combined pill can be taken continuously without a break. Our Team will advise you exactly how to take the dispensed medication, during your consultation.

When used correctly, the combined pill is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

Progestogen-Only Pill (Mini Pill)

The progestogen-only pill contains just one hormone – progestogen – which mimics the effects of the natural hormone progesterone. It mainly works by:

  • Thickening cervical mucus – which blocks sperm from reaching an egg.

You must take the mini pill at the same time every day. Missing a pill, taking it late, or using certain medications can reduce its effectiveness. When taken correctly, it is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

There are two types of progestogen-only pill:

1) Traditional version – must be taken within a 3-hour window of your usual time

2) Desogestrel POPs – must be taken within 12 hours of the same time each day.
